There will be a 10-team league from the 2022 season. Recently the IPL increased the auction purse to Rs 90 crore, with different retention slabs set. Existing franchisees can retain a maximum of four players, while two new unnamed franchises – Lucknow and Ahmedabad – can buy three players each from the player pool after retaining the original eight teams.

If a franchise retains four players, then Rs 42 crore will be deducted from the total purse. If three retentions are done, then this purse will be reduced by Rs 33 crore, while if two players are retained, then the purse will be reduced by Rs 24 crore and if one retention is done then Rs 14 crore will be deducted from the purse.
